A chapter in Contemporary Economic Issues in Asian Countries: Proceeding of CEIAC 2022, Volume 2, 2023, pp 411-434 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract Despite being a very familiar concept, rural tourism is quite new in the development agenda of emerging countries. In fact, it is closely linked to a holistic sustainable approach that includes the interrelation among different forms of tourism taking place in a certain rural area. Hence, the development of rural tourism is the harmonious development of different tourism forms in rural areas on the basis of harnessing the strengths of tourism resources of a certain rural countryside. In that way, rural tourism has become an indispensable component of the rural economy that generates alternative livelihood for rural residents. Considering both theoretical and empirical aspects, this chapter addresses the development of rural tourism in the sustainable manner, especially for transitioning economies like Vietnam. Key policy recommendations are provided on the roles of a local government in partnership with private sectors to enhance the competitiveness of rural tourism in villages.
