Abstract: Abstract This chapter examines the theoretical and management significance of Japan’s cleaning and mundane “bonji” tasks, and by explicating the latest trends in management studies in Europe and the United States, shows that Japanese companies with cleaning have a unique approach both to problem-solving and to generating goals. Specifically, I present the value of means-oriented as against goal-driven problem solving in a business environment of high uncertainty. Through the examples of Japanese companies that have used cleaning as a starting point for addressing various problems, I demonstrate the historical and theoretical problem-solving effectiveness of the heuristics of cleaning and mundane bonji tasks. I argue, too, that this is a feature of Japanese corporations that merits appreciation and preservation, especially in today’s environment of fierce global competition.
