Chapter Chapter 7 in Agile Against Lean, 2023, pp 225-253 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract This chapter attempts to make both theoretical and empirical reflections on Hyundai Motor’s production system, illuminating its two sides and discussing its future prospects in the face of rapid transformation in the automobile industry. We have explained the driving force behind Hyundai Motor’s compressed growth as an agile production system characterized by the ability of engineers to solve problems in an improvisational manner, skill-saving work organization and segmented labor, and extended quasi-vertical suppliers’ relationships. This system exists under the chaebol corporate governance structure in which the chongsu exerts influence that is entrepreneurial in some cases but discretionary in others. We call the organizing principle of Hyundai Motor’s agile production system as a type of ‘authoritarian experimentalism’. Hyundai Motor’s success has also involved transferring the burden of uneven development to the business ecosystem in Korea.
