Abstract: Abstract The Bengali population of the unitary province of Bengal was divided by a geographical border, with one joining India and the other joining Pakistan. East Pakistan later emerged as Bangladesh, an independent sovereign nation, in 1971. Though linguistically they are not different, Bangladesh and West Bengal of India have been seeing the emergence of similar as well as dissimilar trends in their literature since then. This Chapter looks at the various economic, social, and political developments that have influenced the creation of voluminous literature in the forms of novels, short stories, poems, essays, etc. In this article, narratives of two Bengals before and after 1947, particularly after 1971 have been discussed mainly. The role the middle class and its mentality in both Bengals have played in the literary world has especially been mentioned. Also, the focus has been given to highlighting the place of socially marginalized people in the literature of both Bangladesh and India (read West Bengal). The Chapter also takes notice of the emergence of a new genre of literature known as “Border Literature” in both countries. That again gives focus to a large segment of people who are divided by boundary, offenses, distress, and enmity that have emerged on the border since 1947.
