Chapter Chapter 5 in Economic, Environmental and Health Consequences of Conservation Capital, 2023, pp 55-68 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract In this study, it is aimed to develop appropriate policies to reduce the negative environmental factors caused by nuclear energy. To proceed, first of all, a detailed literature review on nuclear energy is conducted to derive all adverse environmental conditions created by nuclear energy. After that, necessary strategies will be developed to overcome these problems. In the light of the information obtained, it has been understood that the most serious problem in nuclear energy use is the radioactive wastes. Also, the main reason for this is the uranium element used in nuclear reactors. This situation is one of the main reasons for the protests against nuclear power plants. Moreover, it is seen that thorium element can also be used in nuclear reactors instead of uranium. Thus, the easiest way to minimize the environmental problems in nuclear energy use is to choose thorium instead of uranium. Additionally, an evaluation has been made with DEMATEL to understand the significant issues to minimize negative environmental impacts of nuclear energy usage. It is concluded that countries should mainly focus on technological factors in this regard.
