A Brief History and Current Development of Impact Investing Globally

Finance Center for South-South Cooperation

A chapter in Impact Investing, 2023, pp 15-38 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract Impact investing emerged as a new type of investment in the past decades probably due to two reasons. Firstly, in a larger sense, the emergence of impact investment is a reaction to the negative consequences of capitalism or neoliberalism. The negative consequences include but are not limited to growing income inequality, poverty, unemployment, racial and gender inequity, disparity in health and education outcomes, and many other social problems. Impact investments emerged in its inner heart to respond to these rising economic and social issues.
