Chapter Chapter 2 in Guns and Ledgers, 2023, pp 25-81 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract The early era of economic globalization was a world shaped by trade. Different from the world trade network shaped by the Silk Road before fifteenth century, the world entered a new phase with the Age of Discovery. The trade network transcended continental boundaries, connecting an increasing number of regions ever more closely. The rapid movement of goods, merchants, and silver facilitated the emergence of a closely interconnected international trade network in the East Asian World, forming a world in some sense ‘without borders.’
