Chapter Chapter 6 in Guns and Ledgers, 2023, pp 255-309 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract Since the Qin Dynasty, China has adhered to a strategy of demarcating the borders and defending them. This approach was influenced by both the abundance of internal resources and geographical constraints. Faced with challenges from neighboring powers, Ming Dynasty adopted a passive defensive strategy, concentrating its limited resources to counter the threats from the north, while relinquishing its expansionist endeavors in the southern seas. As firearms and military structures emerged as weaknesses in the Ming army, the significant military reforms undertaken in weaponry, tactics, and organization during the late Ming period only resulted in the formation of small-scale elite forces. These reforms, combined with the outdated and corrupt administrative system at the time, became a powerful tool for the rise of the new dynasty.
