The Origins of Cricket in Australia

Chapter Chapter 3 in Professionalism and Commercialism in Australian Cricket, 2023, pp 35-51 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract A starting point for any historical, or quasihistorical, study of cricket in Australia that uses economic analysis is to identify the reasons behind the initial demand for the game in Australia. This invariably means looking at the economic and demographic origins of the six British colonies, which were established in Australia in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Before looking specifically at the rising interest in cricket in Australia in the nineteenth century, it is necessary to appreciate the more general changes that were occurring in Australia in terms of migration, economic development, technological change, and institutional adaptation.
