Abstract: Abstract In Australian cricket in the past, and even today, the basic building block on which the game is built is the local clubs. In the capital city of each state, a premier club competition, referred to as either first-grade, district, or the premier competition, was formed in the nineteenth century, from which came the state and national playersPlayers. Although each capital city, and country areas, also have other clubs and competitions, it was the first-grade clubs that had the key role in developing state and national cricket playersPlayers. The clubs were instrumental in forming the state cricket associationsState cricket associations, which in turn later created the national governing bodies. Understanding, then, how the basic institutional structure of the games’ governance means being able to understand the structure of the city-based club competitions.
