Chapter Chapter 4 in From Colonial Seaports to Modern Coastal Cities, 2024, pp 87-109 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract In a world marked by increased global economic integration and growing concerns about sustainable development, maritime transportation emerges as a crucial factor in the growth of the Bohai Economic Rim. Against the backdrop of economic reforms and the concept of openness, China has recognized the significance of maritime exploration and has systematically developed a strategic approach to maritime endeavors. Notably, the Bohai Economic Rim has witnessed intergovernmental collaboration between provincial and municipal authorities, fostering an environment conducive to regional growth. This cooperation has led to the emergence of a diverse range of industries, including port operations, resource development, and tourism, leveraging the region’s natural coastline to establish a comprehensive international port (Sheng, L., Yin, Y. C., Zhang, A. N., Wu, J. W., & Yang, Z. Q. (In Press). Modeling casino hospitality business cycles. Argumenta Oeconomica). Furthermore, the Bohai Economic Zone has placed a strong emphasis on the transportation sector, particularly port-related industries, further fueling the development of the entire Bohai Economic Rim. The central government in Beijing has tasked the Bohai Economic Zone with formidable responsibilities, positioning it as a primary economic catalyst and a significant player in China’s commitment to deeper global engagement. This chapter explores the historical evolution of China’s foreign policy and its evolving maritime prowess in the modern era. Moreover, it delves into the new role, opportunities, and challenges facing the Bohai Economic Rim and how these challenges can be addressed.
