Abstract: Abstract Bogdanov and Bazarov, childhood friends, both Marxists trained in chemistry, shared interest in empiricist philosophy of science, developed independently by two German-speaking authors: Ernst Mach and Richard Avenarius. Bogdanov and Bazarov borrowed and modified their theory (known as empiriocriticism), adapting it to the specific context of the emerging socialist state. This paper gives a short description of the main postulates of empiriocriticism: repudiation of metaphysics, understanding of knowledge as a description of experience, epistemological phenomenalism. It also examines the modifications, made by Bogdanov (mainly the introduction of the role of collective experience), and the further use of Bogdanov’s principles by Bazarov in his economic investigations. The last section dwells on eventual Western reaction on Bazarov’s and Bogdanov’s work.
