Lenin’s Development Economics: An Outline

Denis Melnik

A chapter in Russian and Western Economic Thought, 2022, pp 143-162 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract While the literature on Lenin is vast, a comprehensive modern study guide on Lenin’s economics is lacking. Denis Melnik’s chapter approaches the task of making one by interpreting Lenin’s economics as a lifelong study of capitalist dynamics. Rather than a systematic academic endeavor, it was a series of excursions into the field driven by the revolutionary vision in a changing political context in Russia and the West. The chapter shows that in his last contributions on the matter, which concerned the trends of global “imperialist” economy, Lenin was consistent with the theoretical approach he elaborated at the beginning of his career, when he tried to elaborate on Marx’s analysis of capitalist dynamics to make it applicable to the situation of an underdeveloped agrarian economy.
