Abstract: Abstract In 1938 Gunnar Myrdal began his study of the American race issue on behalf of the Carnegie Corporation. Myrdal began by assembling a diverse team from leading institutions, including Ralph Bunche and Doxey Wilkerson from Howard University. Myrdal identified the American Creed as central to understanding racial dynamics, rooted in Enlightenment philosophy, Anglo-Saxon legal traditions, and Protestant religion. These ideals of equality starkly contrasted with the reality of racial discrimination in America. Myrdal proposed the theory of vicious and virtuous circles, where discrimination and poor conditions for black Americans reinforced each other, creating a cycle of oppression. Conversely, reducing discrimination could improve living conditions and decrease prejudices, fostering a virtuous circle. Myrdal’s book An American Dilemma published in 1944 became a seminal work, highlighting the moral conflict in American society. It received widespread acclaim, influenced civil rights legislation, and became a key reference in the fight for racial equality in the USA.
