Chapter Chapter 8 in Gunnar Myrdal, 2025, pp 135-166 from Springer Abstract: Abstract The UN established the Economic Commission for Europe (ECE) in Geneva to aid post-war reconstruction. Gunnar Myrdal became its first Executive Secretary in 1947, advocating for East-West collaboration despite Cold War tensions. However, the Marshall Plan in 1947 shifted its focus, leading to the establishment of the Organization for European Economic Co-operation (OEEC) for Western Europe in Paris, sidelining the ECE. Nonetheless, the ECE played a crucial role in managing coal distribution, promoting trade, and developing technical cooperation in Europe. Myrdal’s efforts to bridge East and West faced resistance, notably from Dag Hammarskjöld’s pro-Western stance. Despite the Cold War’s peak, Myrdal facilitated bilateral trade consultations, contributing to eventual trade resumption. His tenure saw significant economic studies and fostering international cooperation, albeit amid personal and professional challenges. Hammarskjöld’s appointment as the UN Secretary-General was a harsh blow to Myrdal’s self-esteem. Alva Myrdal became a prominent UN official and then Swedish ambassador to India. Gunnar Myrdal’s work concluded in 1957 when he transitioned to research in India, for his work on Asian Drama.
