Abstract: Abstract This chapter visits Rueff's social philosophy with reference to his main work, Social Order, which he wrote during WWII and published after the war. Rueff establishes “ownership” as “the most general right of human being.” He also distinguishes between this “ownership,” the “legal system” that guarantees the exclusivity of ownership, and the “social order” that guarantees the free exchange of wealth. The “price mechanism” is said to be inseparable from the others. When these relationships are established, ownership becomes a “true right,” but it becomes a “false right” when it suffers from state intervention such as budget deficits or damage to the value of the currency. In view of this social and monetary theory, economics is not an independent science, but rather a science embedded in the legal system. Rueff, who thoroughly praised the free market, was at the same time grounded in a social philosophy that did not regard economics as a “science of wealth.”
