Chapter 8 in Capital Market Finance, 2022, pp 255-308 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract Stocks and shares are the parts of equity capital that materialize property rights on the firm's assets and its future production. Shares are issued upon the creation of a corporation and, later on, whenever new investments require an increase in equity. The sum of all ordinary shares makes up the firm’s common stock. These issues are carried out on a stock exchange or over the counter. Corporations issue new shares on the primary market. The secondary market ensures the liquidity of existing shares. Section 8.1 is devoted to general notions about shares and to the analysis and valuation of stocks. Section 8.2 describes the statistical characteristics of future prices and the mathematical representation of their dynamics as stochastic processes. Section 8.3 presents the organization and functioning of stock markets. Section 8.4 analyzes stock market indices.
