Abstract:
Abstract This is the story of SOFMAN, a steel construction firm based in Athens, Greece, that decided to internationalise its operations as an aftermath of the financial crisis that tormented the country between 2010-2015. During a period that the home market was shrinking, the firm earned contracts in Nigeria, Ebola-stricken Sierra Leone, then Central and Eastern Europe. The case study sheds light on how SOFMAN managed to overcome various people management challenges. Lessons learned pertain not only to the management of crisis but also to international, project-based HRM, which is a challenge frequently encountered by construction firms.
