Abstract: Abstract The introduction puts electricity and more generally energy systems in the context of human development and climate change. Therefrom, the authors derive the motivation and the objectives for the book. The authors want to introduce a broad audience of readers to key economic and engineering characteristics and also major environmental and societal aspects of power systems and their sustainable transformation. From these considerations, the organisation of the material is derived and its use in different courses at Bachelor or Master levels is discussed.
