Abstract:
Abstract Preparing an organization for continued present and future success is one of the most important roles and challenges that the leaders of contemporary organizations face. Visionary organizations and their leaders recognize the mission-critical role that skillfully crafted strategic plans play in preparing and positioning their organization to successfully face the various challenges that may confront their organization. The nature and impact of these challenges will vary, as will their predictability. Challenges to an organization’s continuing success can arise within both its task and general environments. Environmental scanning enables organizational leaders to properly identify and evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of their organization, in light of the environmental opportunities and threats that it faces, as they develop and implement a comprehensive strategic plan that provides insightful strategic direction, including an appropriate set of strategies and goals that support an organization’s present mission and future vision.
