Chapter Chapter 11 in International Business Management, 2025, pp 323-352 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract In this chapter, the basic issues of managing information systems (ISs) in a multinational organization are introduced. The chapter discusses the characteristics of computer-based information systems and the benefits they bring to the organization. It elaborates on the IS applications that enable the firm to link with its suppliers, customers, and other organizations including the government. These include electronic data interchange, enterprise resource planning, and supply chain management. The chapter explores the ramifications of internationalization on the IS function in the firm. It examines various IS options and suggests the alternatives available to MNCs. Also, in this chapter, we learn about the impact of information technology on MNC operations. Based on the MNCs’ requirements and the environmental limitations that they experience, this chapter makes several suggestions for the deployment of specific IS. Finally, the impact of the internationalization of the firm on the responsibilities and duties of the chief information officer is discussed.1
