Chapter 1 in Design Science Methodology for the Management Sciences, 2025, pp 1-19 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract In this chapter, we problematize the traditional science as we know it and introduce the science of the artificial, of which an artefact is the outcome. We also look at the scientific philosophical foundations of the science of the artificial, more specifically pragmatism and social constructionism. In the end, we discuss what knowledge is all about, from the three virtues of Aristotle to the difference between explicit and tacit knowledge. Knowledge is not ‘narrowed’ to episteme in management and management sciences, when dealing with the knowledge virtues from Aristotle. We can also speak of knowledge when dealing, besides episteme, with techne and phronesis. And all three can be used when dealing with management research.
