Chapter 1 in Business Ethics and the Environment, 2025, pp 3-18 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract Has our environmental degradation become so pervasive that we must question our ability to manage our national and global affairs? This is a paramount question for our time. Our democratic institutions originated in the Enlightenment philosophy of the “social contract,” which was perhaps best reflected in Kant’s theory of moral construction. This chapter briefly reviews this philosophy as a framework for explaining our efforts of collective imperfect duty (duties of virtue) for addressing our environmental problems. It also introduces Aquinas’Aquinas, Thomas natural law as applicable, and reviews utilitarianism as not applicable. Consequently, this chapter introduces the foundation philosophy for motivating our crucial environmental advocacy organizations (EAOs) as the institutions that interact with government agencies to address our national and global environmental problems.
