Chapter Chapter 9 in Healthcare Analytics, 2026, pp 63-75 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract This is the introductory chapter of Part III of the book. It explains customer service models and operations strategy paradigms. It also explains hospital revenue models, especially the DRG-based payment system used for inpatient care in the USA. Finally, it describes regulations that have a direct bearing on hospitals’ ability to realize efficient operations. This chapter may be discussed with the Prime Health Partners short case, which describes the late-start problem linked to pre-op operations. The case comes with data. It helps focus attention on the analysis of root causes of delays and the consequences of various strategies for achieving on-time starts of surgeries.
