Chapter 2 in Foundations of Digital Government, 2014, pp 19-32 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract The informational power and connectivity of the internet provides new opportunities for government to promote digital democracy and modernize public service delivery. In this chapter, we discuss how digital government has the potential to change government. On the one hand, we discuss how digital government enables more direct democratic elements in representative democracies and how these opportunities will put pressure on government to let citizens participate in decision-making. On the other hand, we discuss how digital government provides new opportunities for public service delivery and how it has the potential to transform the public administration towards a more citizen-oriented and transparent public service provider.
