Abstract: Abstract This chapter discusses four important conditions on social decision rules, namely, Pareto-criterion, monotonicity, neutrality, and anonymity. The idea of Pareto-optimality is discussed in detail. May’s theorem characterizing the method of majority decision is stated and proved. The Pareto-rule is defined and discussed.
