Chapter Chapter 1 in Male Fertility Patterns and Determinants, 2011, pp 3-10 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract The first chapter is an introductory chapter which discusses the research background and provides an overview of the book. The chapter starts with a brief introduction of the female-dominated tradition in demographic and sociological studies of fertility. The chapter then discusses a number of reasons, including biological, sociological and methodological matters that have caused men to be ignored in conventional studies of fertility. Despite the female-dominated tradition in fertility studies, the chapter highlights a growing body of literature on male fertility, which indicates that men have received an increasing amount of research attention in recent years. In the end, the chapter emphasizes the importance of bringing men into fertility research. The chapter also outlines the objectives and the structure of the book and points out how this book improves existing literature on male fertility.
