Abstract: Abstract In this final chapter an attempt is made to translate the results of the analysis presented before into recommendations for European policy measures for the future. An overview of the contemporary social and population policy objectives of the EU is presented and various policy directions are discussed in their context. The proposed measures are subsequently evaluated from the point of view of their long-term plausibility, which enables final recommendations to be made for particular policy means for Europe in the context of population ageing. It is argued that only a combination of policies aimed at increasing fertility and labour force participation, together with a reasonable level of immigration, can help meet the socio-economic challenges posed by population ageing.
