Chapter Chapter 7 in The History and Politics of Public Radio, 2021, pp 99-124 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract This chapter considers the most serious and sustained effort yet to defund NPR: that of Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich and the Republican-controlled House of Representatives elected in November 1994. A central contention of the abolitionists was that NPR was “elitist,” and both scholarly studies and NPR's own data reveal that its listeners do fit a demographic profile that contrasts sharply with that of non-listeners along lines of wealth, formal education, and residence. This chapter also recounts the scandals of the second decade of the twenty-first century which have given new energy to the organization's critics.
