Abstract:
Abstract The paper is based on a presentation made at WCTRS – SIG11 International Symposium held at Nagoya in 2009. The paper discusses the trends in India’s transport sector and their implications for energy and the environment. The share of the railways in the movement of both freight and passengers between cities has steadily declined with the corresponding increase in the share of road transport. In urban India, there has been an exponential growth in personal vehicles and a decline in the share of public transport. Against this background, scenarios for future development are presented, and policy initiatives discussed to promote a low carbon sustainable
