Abstract: The first year of education in the Slovenian school system is an important time for immigrant students regarding their social and lingual involvement. Immigrant students are first put into an introductory class, which starts before the school year begins, in the last week of August. It is intended to help with social and lingual integration in the new environment; they learn the basic communication patterns in Slovenian language, the culture of the country as well as contents of the civic and homeland education. Besides that, they can introduce their language and culture to others, get acquainted with the teachers while the teachers can meet the parents. In this way, the probability of cooperation with the parents throughout the year increases. They are taught about learning and daily contents which will be part of their lives in the new environment (school and life in it, subjects, etc.) Immigrant students of the first educational period learn the language through play, while those of the second and third period use learning materials, texts. The aim of the introductory class in to make immigrant students feel safer and more accepted and they are introduced to the new language before the school year begins.
