Abstract:
This chapter consists of sections on Introduction, Historical Overview, The Environment for Entrepreneurship and Toward the Future. Introduction, as follows:England annexed Wales in 1536. In 1707, the Kingdom of Scotland was united with the Kingdom of England creating the Kingdom of Great Britain. In 1801, the latter formed a legislative union with the Kingdom of Ireland, the result of which was the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. When the Irish Free State seceded, in 1922, the name was modified to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (UK), and the United Kingdom has since shared a border with Ireland. This kingdom — with a land area of 241,930 square kilometres — consists of England, the capital of which is London (see Worrall, 2000); Northern Ireland — the devolved administration of which is in Belfast; Scotland, with its devolved administration in Edinburgh — which Cerruti (1976) referred to as a capital in search of a country; and Wales — with its devolved administration in Cardiff (Exhibit 22.1)…
