Chapter 5 in A Complexity Approach to Sustainability:Theory and Application, 2017, pp 249-313 from World Scientific Publishing Co. Pte. Ltd.
Abstract:
In the previous chapters, we have explored how we can develop Beer’s original viability theory into sustainability research, at the levels of individual businesses or projects, and more widely, of communities and societies. Beer developed the basic theory and applied it to both businesses and societies. The theory started from understanding a viable system as a neural network type of organization, based on the cybernetic principles of self-organization and self-regulation, as the next section will explain.
