US Trends in Farm and Off-Farm Rural Employment

J. Michael Harris and Ashok Mishra ()

Chapter 13 in Rural Policies and Employment:TransAtlantic Experiences, 2019, pp 207-220 from World Scientific Publishing Co. Pte. Ltd.

Abstract: Agriculture is one of the most productive sectors in the US economy. The amount of labor used in farming has declined since the early years of farming. The long-term trend of less-farm labor and more of the other farm inputs has allowed farm operators and other family members to allocate more time to off-farm jobs. Most farmers receive income from off-farm work, but small-scale operations rely on off-farm income to sustain their operations. More than half of US farm operations are small-scale and have annual sales of less than $10,000.
