Chapter 11 in Innovation Analytics:Tools for Competitive Advantage, 2023, pp 257-275 from World Scientific Publishing Co. Pte. Ltd.

Abstract: In an open innovation environment of intersecting multidisciplinary engineering domains, it is tough to decide on suitable alternate design models which meet the conflicting, multiple objectives with constraints and uncertainty. This chapter presents the application of a fuzzy logic-based multi-objective decision-making model in order to acquire meaningful information linguistically and rank alternatives for design evaluation. The proposed method uses the linguistic ratings of domain experts to formulate fuzzy sets of multiple objectives. In the present work, a weighted logical decision function is formulated to identify the best alternative design model which meets the user preferences. A case study on mobile robot chassis design evaluation is considered to highlight the application of fuzzy logic in the multi-criteria decision-making process, and the results are presented. The proposed method can handle the linguistic information under uncertainty and it will be helpful for the decision-making process in a product development environment.
