Automating Innovation

Navneet Bhalla

Chapter 7 in Artificial Intelligence and Innovation Management, 2022, pp 117-141 from World Scientific Publishing Co. Pte. Ltd.

Abstract: Artificial intelligence is changing the way we invent. Although it is not commonplace today, artificial intelligence is being used for product innovation, for example, in the design of physical objects and software. However, a far less explored area is applying artificial intelligence to process innovation. Developing new processes can be transformative, such as the invention of the moving assembly line. This chapter presents how the same artificial intelligence algorithms, specifically evolutionary computing, used for product innovation can be leveraged for process innovation. The design of self-organizing materials is used as an example to guide the reader through topology optimization (product innovation) to the creation of complex systems (process innovation). The principles from designing complex systems using artificial intelligence are abstracted — constraints, time, and noise — and discussed in the context of Industry 4.0.
