Anatomy of Vehicle Relocation Problems in (E-)Carsharing

Alfred Benedikt Brendel and Lutz M. Kolbe

Chapter 9 in Electric Vehicles in Shared Fleets:Mobility Management, Business Models, and Decision Support Systems, 2022, pp 193-212 from World Scientific Publishing Co. Pte. Ltd.

Abstract: The heterogeneous nature of carsharing systems and vehicle relocation problems calls for individually tailored solutions, varying across a spectrum of different formats, characteristics and dimensions. However, to date, there are no taxonomic guidelines in the context of (E-)carsharing for the facilitation of problem description and solution comparability across the multitude of context-specific studies and solutions, thereby limiting the scope of solution development, scientific discussion and generalizability of findings. Following a three phase approach, we contribute to current research by developing a taxonomic classification scheme of relocation problems, allowing for: (1) consistent descriptions and analyses of vehicle relocation problems and (2) identification of research gaps.
