Chapter 10 in Electric Vehicles in Shared Fleets:Mobility Management, Business Models, and Decision Support Systems, 2022, pp 213-232 from World Scientific Publishing Co. Pte. Ltd.

Abstract: While electric vehicles are a promising means to reaching a more sustainably mobile future, they are yet to be adapted for everyday use by a wider audience. In this context, E-carsharing offers a way to introduce and utilize electric vehicles as a sustainable mobility service to solve current and future mobility issues. Nonetheless, E-carsharing still faces several challenges that need to be overcome in order to act as a mainstream means of commute. In this chapter, we propose user-based relocation as a way to improve the utilization and availability of electric vehicles within E-carsharing. By simulating an E-carsharing system, we were able to analyze the capabilities of user-based relocation. The results indicate that user-based relocation has the potential to greatly improve electric vehicle utilization. Implementation of user-based relocation improves the availability of electric vehicles and therefore strengthens E-carsharing as a part of everyday e-mobility.
