Abstract: In the previous chapter, we consider an environment with homogeneous agents in each generation. In this chapter, we allow for heterogeneity across families to explore how the evolutionary process continues to affect innovation and technological progress in modern times. People have different levels of ability, so heterogeneity in education ability matters for human capital formation and gives rise to endogenous heterogeneity in fertility. How would the resulting evolutionary process influence technological progress and economic growth? To explore this question, we extend the Romer model with endogenous fertility in the previous chapter to allow for heterogeneous agents who differ in the ability to educate their children…
