Abstract: Thanks again for inviting me and it is wonderful to be speaking again on this issue of cost of living. I was invited last year after writing an article for BBC Capital that kind of looked a bit more closely at The Economist’s Cost of Living Index which consistently ranked Singapore at the top, and the reason was exclusively cars because Singapore has specific policies to make car ownership more expensive, the trade-off being that there are fewer cars on the road. Car ownerships rates here are very low and you do not have traffic jams here like you do in many other countries. Of course, it just underscores the difficulties of any realistic and meaningful measure of the cost of living. The research presented here and by The Economist’s index and the other major indices always rely on a number of assumptions…
