Abstract:
The following is the Preamble of the Constitution of the United States of America, which was signed into law on 17 September 1787 as follows:We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.Two clear messages contained in this passage have direct relevanceto the sustainable business movement: to provide a framework thatwould first "promote the general Welfare" and second "secure theBlessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity." Both of theseintentions underpin quite a similar ambition of the sustainable business movement — to promote and secure the welfare of the current generation and of future generations. Today, over 225 years since the signing of the U.S. Constitution, sustainable business pioneers have aligned with our founding fathers in this far-reaching commitment.
