Abstract: Despite much recent attention to gender inequality and empowerment of women and girls, gender inequality persists in both developed and developing countries. We maintain after considering the chapters herein that gender inequality is not a consequence of religion per se, but of various dimensions of culture and social norms, institutions, laws and policies of the society, and the interaction of these factors with economic development. Culture and social norms contain much variation in interpretation of religion across time and space, and religion is often used as a rationale to support social rules, common practices, and law, even when these predate arrival of the religion. Nevertheless, these vary widely over space and time, so cannot be claimed to stem directly from a single religion…
