The Rise of Data-Driven Business Models in the Berlin Start-up Scene

Abstract: With the advent of big data technologies such as cloud computing, internet of things, and artificial intelligence, data-driven business models have become a new unit of analysis in business model research. Tracing back to different roots in scholarly business model literature, researchers have begun to create a new body of work while trying to capture the essence of data-driven businesses. This article provides an overview of this emerging field, combining a systematic literature review with a qualitative desk research of recently founded data-driven and data-enhanced start-ups. To contribute to the discussion, we propose a definition and a taxonomy of data-driven business models. We then proceed to use the taxonomy in order to analyze the business models of 75 Berlin-based start-ups, focusing on four economic sectors.
