Bo Xia and Ayokunle Olubunmi Olanipekun

Chapter 5 in Building a Body of Knowledge in Construction Project Delivery, Procurement and Contracting, 2023, pp 88-106 from World Scientific Publishing Co. Pte. Ltd.

Abstract: This chapter is aimed at assessing the preferences of project delivery method selection of green building project owners in the Australian construction industry. Specifically, the project delivery and performance information of 173 Green Star certified projects were obtained for research, where the commonly employed project delivery methods for these green building projects are design–bid–build, design–build and construction management at risk. To assess the preferences of project owners for different types of project delivery methods that foster integration and to test whether the performances of green building projects differed with regard to different project delivery methods chosen by owners, this research shows that the design–build is the most preferred project delivery method by project owners. Additionally, the results revealed that office green building projects where project owners employed the design–build had significantly stronger sustainability performance outcomes. This study contributes to the knowledge on the selection of project delivery methods for green building projects and shows how project owners can contribute to the selection and enhancement of project performance.
