Abstract:
Imagine you are at a dinner party making conversation with the person next to you. Commonly, you will start by asking about what they do for a living; that is also the question you first expect from a stranger. Now, imagine said stranger answers as follows: “I work in xyz, but to be honest, I only do it for the money…” In most cases, it is unlikely that you will want to continue the conversation. On an interpersonal level, we have some degree of expectation that the people we interact with do what they do with a certain base level of purpose attached to it. Not so with corporations. Pretty much every corporation, since the invention of the legal entity itself, has openly and assertively declared its purpose to be the maximisation of profit (i.e., shareholder value). What is an acceptable goal for corporations is a poor answer on an interpersonal level. It’s not surprising relational and transactional layers in business appear to coexist like oil and water, whereas they very much should be emulsified…
