Abstract:
This is how Oliveira Vianna, a Brazilian professor and jurist, had described the Japanese community in Brazil in 1932 as he presided over an immigration commission tasked with offering guidance on the future immigration policy of the country. This was a time when numerous reports were drafted warning of the ‘Japanese infiltration’ of Brazilian society. The country’s Justice Minister, criticizing the inability of Japanese migrants to blend into Brazilian society, proclaimed a few years later that Japanese “selfishness, their bad faith, their refractory character, make them a huge ethnic and cultural cyst located in the richest regions of Brazil”. By then, an estimated 200,000 Japanese had settled in Brazil, mostly in the state of São Paulo…
