Abstract: After recording its first coronavirus case on March 5, 2020, South Africa reacted swiftly. Within 10 days, schools were shut, national borders closed, and large gatherings prohibited. By March 27, the country had entered a nationwide lockdown, one of the strictest in the world. Outdoor exercise was banned, and so were sales of alcohol and tobacco. One man was charged with attempted murder for breaching regulations by going to work and contaminating others. Heavy fines were meted out. More than 70,000 army troops were deployed in the streets to enforce the lockdown. Yet despite these drastic measures, and to the surprise of many observers, the number of new cases and deaths continued to rise. Official figures show that, by the end of September 2020, the country had recorded almost 700,000 cases and 17,000 deaths…
