Abstract: On October 14, 1985, Mobutu Sese Seko, the president of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) for the past 20 years, was celebrating his 55th birthday in his hometown of Gbadolite. To mark the occasion, he had requested the services of Gaston Lenôtre, the lead pastry chef in the world, to fly in from Paris on a Concorde jet to prepare his birthday cake. The main party was held at one of Mobutu’s palaces, where guests could enjoy the best dishes brought in from around the world and a wine cellar that was rumored to be one of the finest. Not all the food was imported: the town was surrounded by palm oil, coffee, and coconut plantations; orange and grapefruit groves; and beef and dairy cattle ranches…
