A Valuable World

Thomas Grandjean and ChinHwee Tan

Chapter 12 in Values at the Core:How Human Values Contribute to the Rise of Nations, 2020, pp 169-177 from World Scientific Publishing Co. Pte. Ltd.

Abstract: This book has explored how the combination of human values and policies affects the economic outcome of nations. The harder people work, the higher the growth potential. The willingness and ability to save determines, to a large extent, whether a country will grow through investments and exports. Trust represents a major factor in explaining wealth and income inequalities. Economies with highly risk-averse citizens will stall. Other human values such as family ties, honesty, humility, leadership, and organizational skills likely play some role as well. Whilst the exact contribution of each of these values cannot be ascertained, this book has focused on the ones believed to have the greatest impact on an economy…
