Chapter 7 in Managing Open Service Innovation, 2021, pp 145-166 from World Scientific Publishing Co. Pte. Ltd.

Abstract: Research and Technology Organisations (RTOs) are crucial contributors to national innovation systems, as they provide highly innovative services to European economies and societies. However, very few empirical studies have investigated how RTOs actually develop their service innovations. Thus, this paper explores the new service development (NSD) process of five renowned European RTOs. Our findings suggest that the NSD process in RTOs is ad hoc and highly iterative, and mostly informal. Moreover, this research highlights two additional noteworthy results: the NSD project vs. service innovation “culture” dilemma and the interesting open dimension of the RTOs’ NSD process.
